5th November - Bonfire Night

To begin with I love fireworks. Yes I understand they’re not exactly the most environmentally friendly thing but I love lights and I love sparkly things so I’m afraid fireworks combine both of those aspects.
I love the smell, and the dull thud as the big rockets shoot up always get me excited knowing what’s about to happen.

I also realise many animals, children and adults hate them, I can understand why. No I do not and will not ever hold my own fireworks party, I think they should only be used in public displays and not the back garden.

But anyway enough of that… this year I was unable to attend Sheffield’s After Dark fireworks display (it’s a massive display with the fireworks set to music, attracts around 20,000 people)…The first time in probably 5+ years I haven’t been, and probably the first year of my life that I haven’t been to a display at all – much sadness :( The short story is I was stood up.

However, there is a local display in a sports club not far from here, and the view from our front are fantastic, so I just had to get my camera ready…

Rather shaky... But I like it anyway :)

And building to the crescendo...

I hate them Liz but only because they frighten Louis and other animals so much BUT it is the noise I hate. I love the prettiness of them and I too love sparkly things, preferably diamonds!! I wish!!

Your photos are gorgeous, you really captured them beautifully.

I do so agree about public displays, that would be fine but it is the yobs who let off ones which sound like bombs or cannonballs at all hours of the day and night for weeks on end that make me furious, I'm sure they must be illegal. Thankfully it doesn't seem to have been quite so bad so far this year though.

....you should have rung me up - I'd have gone with you.I love fireworks and everything about them!
The Chesterfield one at Stand Rd was curtailed due to lack of funds - so I was stood up too...by the council!

Crackin photos - I'm well impressed!

Hi Liz....I have to say your photographs are amazing.....BUT
I loathe fireworks with a passion.

At Epcot in Florida there was a firework display...we stayed for the children....the setting was a lake and a huge globe.....For you it would have been a master piece.
Poppi cried all the way through it, Riley had his fingers in his ears.....and I just wanted to go home...
My husband and daughter thought it was amazing and just stood with their mouths open.....the globe opened at the end with lasers and fireworks......

I would like fireworks if they were silent or just wooshed or sputtered but not all those loud bangs :( I am just a wimp really. Your photos are great. I took a few last night. Although I have not downloaded them yet I am sure that I have missed most of the action. Sorry that did not get to the big display.

Your Bonfire night brings back happy memories of Bonfire nights during my growing up years in Australia. We often got together with neighbors, built a bonfire and let off some fireworks. It was loads of fun.
Your photos are spectacular, not just in this post, but all your pics are wonderful. You have a beautiful garden. Your Cosmos were especially glorious.
Thanks for stopping by and saying hello :)

Wow Liz, what a very impressive set of firework shots… good job!!

Yep I’m with everyone on the noise of fireworks… especially at displays where it bounces of buildings giving it almost in surround sound 21.1 ;-)

My daughter had been off school ill but requested a drive to the display in Perth. I expected by the time we drove there at this short notice we would see the noisy finale which would be slightly less noisy with just a couple of windows open as we drove along roads around it…. nope we got that well wrong… I drove into the hoards coming away from it to their cars… it was all over and I got well stuck in the queues and chaos of cars leaving the area :-o

Pity you missed out too… Sheffield’s loss!!

Have a great day…. hope it’s a nice sunny morning with you too :-D

Beautiful photos Liz. Shirl pointed me to your blog entry and I'm pleased she did. I have tried in the past but my old Fuji didn't have a long exposure facility so that was a failure. Next year I must have a go with the Canon.

I've never been a fireworks fan -maybe it's my colorblindness, but I enjoyed sitting at my desk and viewing them via your post. My favorite is the "shaky" one.

great pics, Liz!

Love the -wobbly-electric current one- had you had a few?

I haven't seen any fireworks since we live here. It is illegal in Eire-thank heavens.
Just the one or two, I think.

Hi Yoke - No I hadn't had a few when I took the photo. It's due to the long exposure time on the shutter, just the slightest movement of your hand and it'll cause those lines.

I did have my tripod out, but as I was constantly having to move the camera to catch the action I ended up using it hand-held... Which requires lots of hand control and breath-holding so your body doesn't move.
