Mystery Plant

As I hinted towards yesterday, on my slug patrol I came across something very exciting – for me at least anyway!

Ok, so this isn’t it although very interesting and exciting in its own right! One of the black hollyhocks I planted this year is opening its flowers. Woo hoo!

And now onto the cryptic photos of the wonderful surprise…

Do you know what it is??

Is it grass?

No, I’m not talking about the Geranium!

It certainly looks like grass seed heads…

Does anyone out there know? :)

I am seriously, very excited waiting for it to reveal its glory!

Well it looks like it could be a Crocosmia to me Liz, if it is I have it in my garden, there are several varieties but mine I think is Lucifer. I shall be interested to find out the answer :)

No idea Liz... but hey I'm so jealous of your hollyhock... I planted black ones last year and nothing happened although a few leaves are coming up this year! I wonder...

Hi Liz....black hollyhocks, beautiful....can't wait to see those in bloom. I do not grow them here, they never do well sadly.....

I don't know about this last plant....it does look like a grass but you can never tell....how exciting, can't wait to find out.....

Jan - Nice to see you, I hope you're well! :D

I hope the flowers open soon so I can let everyone know exactly what the plant is...

Shirl - I hope your Hollyhock comes up for you! I haven't had any trouble with them, these were actually planted in a pot originally as they'd began growin in the box I bought them and the ground was still too hard.

Eventually I planted them in the garden and things are going well... Well, apart from the slug damage....... grrrrr

Emma - Nice guess, the answer will be revealed as soon as the flowers actually come out... I have no idea how long it takes though.

Cheryl - They seem to be fine here, what type of soil do you have?

We have heavy clay, well it seems to be quite patchy. Some areas are fine, others heavy orange clay, and 30cm away it can be full of bricks, stones, wood! I can see it's going to take a while to get the soil in good shape!
Just this evening when I planted my climbing rose the soil was fine and then as I dug deeper I suddenly hit the orange clay and now have a nice pile of it waiting to dry out so I can throw it away.

What about Dicentra, only because I have some growing from seed and I am so chuffed.

Those Hollylocks look amazing already, so I'm waiting for the stunning show of those.

Crocosmia? could well be. I spotted some along the road which are almost open already.

but time will tell, what it is in your garden, I guess. Hope we can all survive the suspense?

Lovely photos, again, Liz.

I meant to say Dimeria

Joanne - Dimeria what's that? Is it a type of grass? I don't think I've heard of it before!

Do post photos of your seedlings though, I'm sure they're wonderful :)

That doesn't look anything like my Crocosmia about to bloom. Northern Sea Oats or River Oats? Oh, I don't know!
